About Hanabusa IVF

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Hanabusa IVF is a private fertility clinic in San Diego, California, known for success with both complex fertility cases and patients who are just getting started. We don’t use a one-protocol approach—your plan is built around your biology, your goals, and the safest, most effective path forward.

What “Hanabusa” Means

Hanabusa comes from Japanese and refers to a bouquet of flowers—a name that reflects care, individuality, and many paths coming together into something hopeful.

Achieving Fertility Success with a Holistic IVF Approach with Dr. LeBlanc

Dr. LeBlanc shares how a holistic, patient-centered IVF approach can support both outcomes and well-being—pairing thoughtful medical strategy with whole-person care tailored to your biology, lifestyle, and goals.

Our Philosophy

More isn’t better. Precision is.

In IVF, “more medication” does not automatically mean better outcomes. We take a precision-first approach to protect egg competence and embryo potential—especially for patients who have been told they have low reserve, high FSH, or limited time.

What this means in real care:

Thoughtful stimulation—not aggressive stimulation

For patients who need deeper strategy and more customization, especially those navigating diminished ovarian reserve (DOR), primary/premature ovarian insufficiency (POI/POF), high FSH, fertility after 40, and repeated unsuccessful cycles.

Advanced support for the hardest cases

Many patients come to Hanabusa IVF after hearing “there’s nothing left to do” or after cycles that didn’t match their biology. Our team is especially experienced in complex scenarios, including:

Our goal is always the same: get specific about what happened, what’s changeable, and what path gives you the best chance forward.

Personalized protocols designed to protect egg competence

We work to avoid two common IVF failure modes that can affect egg quality and outcomes:

Overstimulation (FSH too high → impaired egg development)

Overmaturation (triggered too late → eggs “too old” to fertilize or develop)

How we reduce those risks:

Personalized dosing decisions (not one-size protocols)

Careful monitoring and timing

Serial FSH testing throughout stimulation to guide medication adjustments when needed

Trigger timing chosen to support maturity without pushing eggs past their ideal window

Low-medication IVF informed by Japanese protocols—used when it’s the best fit

Hanabusa IVF is well known for Japanese-informed minimal stimulation IVF (often called Mini IVF). This approach uses less medication and aims for a smaller number of high-quality eggs, which may be especially helpful in select DOR/POI situations or when a lower-burden approach is preferred.

Important nuance: Mini IVF is a key capability—not a one-size model. We choose it when it matches your clinical picture, and we use traditional stimulation strategies when those are the better fit.

Where outcomes are protected by systems, checks, and experience

IVF success depends on more than medication. It depends on what happens in the lab—every hour of every day. Our lab culture emphasizes precision, consistency, and careful embryo handling, because small variables can affect outcomes.

Care that respects the emotional and physical reality of treatment

Fertility care can be intense—physically, emotionally, and logistically. We aim to make patients feel cared for as people, not managed as a cycle. When appropriate, many patients also choose supportive care alongside treatment (such as acupuncture and wellness support) to help manage stress and overall well-being during IVF.

Why Hanabusa IVF?

We are an extraordinary IVF operation where we take only a few patients at a time and provide each with excellent service on every level.

This allows us to develop strong relationships with our patients and create a customized treatment plan for each one. Unlike larger fertility clinics, where the goal is to perform as many cycles as possible, we concentrate on each individual case, providing extra care to develop a fertility plan with the highest chances for success.

Deciding on a fertility clinic can be a tough process, especially if you have had unsuccessful IVF results in the past. That is why we are glad you are considering us!

Our Holistic Approach to infertility is often successful for women who have had poor luck with traditional IVF treatment in the past as we are one of the few centers in the United States pioneering in the Minimal Stimulation protocols and unlike other larger fertility clinics, we have over decades of experience and success in the most challenging cases. We are also experienced and fully equipped to offer any fertility treatment services a patient may need, from IUI to surrogacy.

Who We Are

Hanabusa IVF specializes in Minimal Stimulation IVF (“Mini IVF”), which is an alternative to the high-stimulation protocols universally performed throughout the United States.

Our approach is unique from standard treatments, not only regarding the stimulation medication protocol but also in its approach to IVF, which emphasizes retrieval of only the best quality eggs (rather than quantity), leading the greatest opportunity to create a healthy embryo. We can now achieve this while minimizing the risks, side effects, and complications associated with traditional IVF protocols.

A Team Committed to You & Your Family

Masahide Shiotani, M.D., Ph.D., founder of the largest IVF center in Kobe, Japan, Hanabusa Women’s Clinic, and Lyndon Chang, M.D., FACOG, a leading pioneer in the advancement of Mini IVF in the United States, collaborated to create Hanabusa IVF here in California. By bringing this innovative technique to the States, they have opened up a world of opportunity to thousands who have had problems with infertility.

Our dedicated, experienced, and professional team is here to assist you on your journey towards building a family. We offer personalized treatment plans to meet each patient’s individual needs with state-of-the-art technology and extraordinary care.
